Oil Spills:

Dr. Harper has been a senior investigator in several oil spill fate and persistence studies. These have included the Baffin Island Oilspill Experiment (Environment Canada), the Puerto Rican spill (Chevron USA) and the EXXON Valdez (EXXON Co. USA). CORI has been extensively involved with the EXXON Valdez monitoring programs (1989-1994) including mapping, all major field surveys, coordination of the Prince William Sound Fate & Persistence Studies and assistance in preparation for litigation

Oil Spill Contingency Planning:
CORI has been extensively involved with coastal sensitivity mapping related to oil spill contingency planning over the past five years. Mapping projects have been conducted in:
* Strait of Georgia, B.C. (BC Ministry of Environment)
* Western Newfoundland (National Energy Board of Canada)
* Coronation Gulf, Canada (Environment Canada)
* Canadian Beaufort Sea (Gulf Canada Resources)

Oil Spill Databases:
CORI has developed a number of oil spill related databases over the past five years including:
* compilation of a Directory of Canadian Oil Spill Specialists (Canadian Petroleum Association)
* compilation of an electronic bibliography on the EXXON Valdez and Nestucca scientific and technical publications (Fisheries and Ocean Canada)
* compilation of an electronic bibliography on oil fate and persistence studies in ocean and aquatic environments (FOOS.BIB) with over 7,000 citations, approximately 70% abstracted (Fisheries and Ocean Canada).
* compilation of a summary of offshore and onshore cleanup costs of selected marine oil spills in North America (proprietary).

Oil Spill Research:
Since 1989, CORI has been closely involved with shoreline oil spill persistence studies. These have included extensive sediment column testing to evaluate factors affecting the persistence of oil in beaches and evaluation of meso-scale coastal oil spill experiments (Environment Canada).
